Frequently Asked Questions

I am not sure what role to apply for, what should I do?

You can contact us here to speak with an SFFC staff member to explore what would be the best fit for you or your family at this time.

I submitted my application to get involved, now what?

A Safe Families staff member will be in contact by phone and email within a week of applying. They will provide you with the next steps to completing the approval process. They will provide opportunities to complete the training process in person or online.

Will I be able to specify the age, gender, or number of children I can support?

Yes. Host Families care for children ages 0-21. You can specify the age and gender of the child you hope to support as is appropriate for your family, and you can always choose what opportunities you want to step into.

What is the time or service commitment required if I get involved?

There is no required time commitment from the start. You will be given opportunities to serve and can choose which opportunities you want to say “yes” to. Some may require a commitment of 3-6 months of connecting with a family relationally or others may be a set time for hosting a child(ren) such as 1 week, a few doctors’ appointments over the next month, etc. It is common for Host Families to have more capacity at certain times of the year. We are flexible to work with your home space and work schedules as many Host Families can commit to only hosting weekends or could only host one child at a time.

How am I matched with a family in my community?

Safe Families hears either directly from a family looking for support or they are often referred by service agencies in the community such as schools, hospitals, early childhood education programs, etc. If the family is a good fit, Safe Families staff will reach out to the local Ministry Lead at a Safe Families Church to see who in their community is available to support. If volunteers are not a part of a local church, or a family lives in an area without a Ministry Lead, Safe Families will reach out to volunteers directly or through a weekly email with serving opportunities. Ideally, you are matched with a family in your neighborhood who lives no more than 15 minutes away.
